Basil Twist's Obie Award-winning Symphonie Fantastique is headed to Dodger Stages. The show will begin performances at a 199-seat theater within the complex on August 31 in preparation for a September 16 opening.
Broadway.com first reported on March 30 that Symphonie Fantastique was eyeing a run at Dodger Stages. Symphonie Fantastique is a show performed underwater--in a specially constructed water tank--that combines the magic of puppetry with suggestions of music, dance and abstract art. It is set to the five movements of Hector Berlioz's 19th century classical composition of the same name. Out of view of the audience, five puppeteers swirl fabrics, feathers, glitter, vinyl, plastic, dyes, bubbles, fishing lures and flashlights through the 1,000-gallon water tank.
Symphonie Fantastique premiered at Gotham's HERE Arts Center, where it ran from April 1998 to September 1999. During its run, the show won an Obie Award and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. It has since been seen around the world and briefly returned to New York for a limited engagement at Lincoln Center in April of last year.
